Drawing King T’Challa in Wakanda: Chadwick Boseman Tribute

Drawing King T’Challa in Wakanda: Chadwick Boseman Tribute

One of the powerful statements I heard made about Chadwick Boseman after his passing this weekend was that he was our king not because of his role as king….but because of the love he gave us. Despite ongoing cancer treatments, he kept giving, creating, and encouraging others. Oh what a witness to the rest of us!

Rest in power, King T’Challa.

This piece is available for sale on my fine art site as a fundraiser for one of Chadwick’s favorite charities, St Jude’s Children’s Hospital; click HERE. Ends Friday night, good luck!

Crowdcast

I’m just kicking the tires on Crowdcast; I’ve connected it to my Patreon account so there’s a little paywall to keep the trolls out – but it starts at a buck a month, so it’s not exorbitant! If you’d like to follow along with me over there, you can do that HERE.

Color a Realistic Afro in Copic Markers

Color a Realistic Afro in Copic Markers

I’m excited to be able to say I’ve colored this image up in a video – after having posted a version on social media and getting a gajillion requests for a tutorial. ha! Thanks to DigistampAtelier for having such awesome images for us to buy and print and color!

Supplies for this project are linked at the end of this post. Compensated affiliate links may be used at no cost to you.

This is a rarity – a realtime video! I’ve also got some blathering toward the end about my little dream of changing the industry for the better with changing DTs just a bit. Hoping to inspire some Black crafters to get out there and share their work and apply for teams!

One night while watching tv, I printed out the Afro girl digi quite large – and oh was it fun to get into the hair! I love a good hair challenge and this offered a great one. This piece ended up sent as a gift to my Pass the Brush guest – see more about her later in this post!

The final card, printed card-sized; there’s less detail in the hair due to the size but it still worked pretty well! If you’re trying to “learn” an image, sometimes a large version helps to work on technique!

Pass the Brush event!

I’m excited to be one of the hosts for “Pass the Brush” tomorrow and Friday, the 16th and 17th! A group of artists got together to celebrate diversity and hand over our instagram for two days – and Pam will be my guest doing the takeover! We had some FUN and silly zoom meetings – you’re going to love her! Find Pam here:

Watercolor and Copic: 2 flower cards

Watercolor and Copic: 2 flower cards

It’s Monday…it’s July….and it’s time for new stamps for the Summer of Stamping! And they’re FLOWERS this time! I’ve got a watercolor and a Copic card to share – afterward be sure to go see what’s up over on Ellen’s blog, she’s got a hop today and more inspiration all week.

Mondo Pansy in watercolor

This is a simple way to do a watercolor – stamp the flowers all-over and paint them pink, then after dry paint in the background. Leave a little white and it makes you look like you meant to make it loose!

For the background you can leave the light color and just paint in the leaves in the dark – or paint the background dark and leave the leaves lighter!

You Should Know

This is a technique I had on a card I had posted last month on social media – with a surprisingly small number oof markers! The image is stamped twice and more flowers were added.

The color combo below:

Adding an extra card to this post….I was in a green mood today! Yes this is a one-layer card, it’s all stamped in the Lime Rickey. 3 greens (YG03, YG17, G46) and a white pen. I shaded the letters and border myself. Check out a video of a yellow version here in watercolor!

The Human Rainbow: Hair + Masks

The Human Rainbow: Hair + Masks

For those who’ve followed along for years, you might know I’ve been championing the coloring of the full range of people — changing stamps to make them into what we want to color! In the times we’re in, I’ve had so many requests to revisit the idea – so I’m sharing some no-line coloring today.

Supplies for this project are linked at the end of this post. Compensated affiliate links may be used at no cost to you.

If you haven’t tried coloring anyone of another hue, you might want to go download the free Human Rainbow Chart Collection – you’ll get my colored versions as well as blanks you can color yourself:

I first stamped all the people, starting with the ones in front, masking them, then adding each behind. For most I didn’t even worry about stamping the bottoms of their legs and feet since I was just going to extend them off the paper anyway. Whatever stamps you use, be aware of “head size” – if you need to you can adjust some of them to have more hair, less head. lol.

You can also stamp them and just wipe off the hair or mouth portions to be able to draw your own in without the lines to impede you. If it’s a light enough ink though, it’s not a worry. Even the little kids could have masks added on top of the color – but know that if you want white masks, that’s nearly impossible to make it look good if you don’t reserve the white space.

Don’t forget the bald-is-beautiful types too!

There are SO many individual faces and hairstyles to color – just use Google for ideas! Type in the kind of person you’re looking for – race, gender, age, even specify long hair or braids. And adding the word mask may end up giving you party store sites, so that’s only sometimes helpful, but if you’re looking for images of people in masks, look for either protests or reopening photos. Lots of both are out there. On a less complex image you can add patterns to masks.

VOTER REGISTRATION

It’s important to make your voice heard at the ballot box – no matter your perspectives, get your vote in! Lots of states have been purging voter rolls, so I make a habit of always checking 2-3 months before a local/state/federal election, then again 6-8 weeks ahead. My state has all vote-by-mail all the time (they switched to that just as I started working at home and was going to volunteer to be a poll worker! bummer), but you’ll want to check on what your state’s requirements are for voting this fall; many will have alternates to allow people to have options if the Covid pandemic causes danger for people being out in public.

There’s a SUPER easy website that takes 30 seconds to check your registration; note that you need to put in your legal name, I tried with “Sandy” and scared myself when it couldn’t find me! lol.

Go to Vote.org, all you need is to click on “check your registration” and enter your name/address/phone/email – it’ll let you know!

Coloring a realistic bee – no line copic + pencil

Coloring a realistic bee – no line copic + pencil

It’s time for a new release by Colorado Craft Company! They sent me the bee – perfect for me as a lover of all things yellow – and at the last minute I added a bonus video to the end so stay tuned!

Supplies for this project are linked at the end of this post. Compensated affiliate links may be used at no cost to you.

FYI the bee is GIANT so my card recommendation will be to just have part of the bee on the card – you could even cut him right down the middle and get 2 cards out of one coloring session! Or just do him as noline coloring and frame him….

I think CCC may have had mee in mind with all the yellow-themed stamps this month, don’t you think?

The stamp set also has beeeautiful sentiments – all about being kind. Irony given what I spoke of in the video about social media eh?

The additional card…..with the sunflowers:

Favorite paper and fixative for colored pencil

Favorite paper and fixative for colored pencil

It’s Friday – and still pandemic season….so it’s time for another totally random vlog! It’s hard to even know what to title these things – but hopefully they’re crazy enough that a few folks will take a peek…like you! Thanks for visiting, it means a lot in this slow blogworld we’re living in!

I wanted to make some cards with the new Purple Onion stamps for this release – and also worked with some new MFT stamps by the same artist, Stacey Yacula! She has such a sweet and distinctive style.

View on YouTube.

First – thank yous!

All kinds of little gifts to be grateful for….a wallet from Lisa, a Tomoe River notebook from Sharon, an accordion sketchbook from an anonymous giver, and a sweet yellow Chico bag from someone whose card got separated from the bag so I’ve been unable to say thanks. So thank you to everyone who sends cards and treats – you’re too sweet!

Purple Onion release

The release is today! I don’t have an exact link while writing this but here’s the “NEW STAMPS” category where I’m sure they’ll appear! I colored up this card with Copics….

Here’s one in colored pencil….

And the SIX HOUR card! I sat on the sofa watching movies with my pencils…and this is what happened. SO FUN! It might never leave the house though….ha!

Testing papers

This is the cream paper, with MFT’s

If you want to get graphite to stay put, fixatif (fixative) sprays can help; there are some that are light – meaning they’re more workable so you can spray it while working and overdraw parts as you go….and then there are heavy ones that you can’t work on more once finished. I use a light coat of Delacroix by Sennelier.
