I’ve been wanting to do something with a fun drawing I saved since first grade – it’s a poster I made for Earth Day 1971, and I won a ribbon for it! So many little things in this drawing made me realize that even as a little girl I was built for art….so it’s always been framed in my house.

Supplies for this project are linked at the end of this post. Compensated affiliate links may be used at no cost to you.
Today….I’m taking that poster to a new level! I wanted to do an homage to the drawing, recreating it in one of my current styles – and urban sketching seemed most appropriate! And with all the cleared-up pollution we see around us since we’re not driving etc as usual, let’s hope we can change up how we do things and keep the pollution down, eh?

This was such a FUN project – trying to figure out what I was thinking as a kiddo!

I know I have an envelope full of drawings around here somewhere, I might need to do more of these.

Wow! You have been an artist since your earliest days!!!
How adorable! You were such an artist even as a little girl! I love the little items you put on display in the window. And I thought that was a little Scottie dog, too! And you had graphic typography skills! You know it’s precious you still have things from when you were little. My parents kept nothing. But I have a box of favorites from all my children that I keep. I cherish my children and watching them learn and grow. Some of their art still cracks me up! The remake of your childhood art is positively fabulous! Your pens sound dreamy good to draw with!
I love how you revisited your previous work as inspiration for a current project. What a tremendous idea to not only identify growth but to appreciate the talent we showed back then. I especially like your first grade self’s window curtains. I remember making those, too. Lastly, thank you for sharing your mishaps as well as your successes. It encourages me not to be so hard on myself. As always thank you for your inspiration and encouragement!
This is for sure a childhood drawing of someone who had to study art. Your work, from 1th grade and now is awesome!
I loved to see how you made this and I had looked very good to your childhood drawing and saw some things I thought were great, you then already had a lot of imagination and that is what you need to make art, I think.
Thank you so much for sharing this, stay safe and happy Earth Day.
I love how you CASEd your childhood self. Fabulous. Happy Earth Day.
This is fabulous! Look forward to seeing more of your first grade drawings upgraded.
And a Happy Earth Day to you too! I have been noticing how much less I’m using my car, and the low numbers of cars on the streets… I hope we don’t all just “explode” when we finally get released from our quarantines… Love your “Before and After” posters – that looks like tons of fun!
