Welcome! I’m excited to bring you this series of paint-along videos all week – thanks for stopping by!
Paint-Along Series #1: Barn
The first painting we’ll do together is a barn – I kept it somewhat simple but included some areas that advanced watercolorists can really get into (try adding more wood texture and roof details!) The videos this week are all in real-time; I did cut out a few moments here and there, and you do get a good bit of boring chatter, as it’s hard to fill that much time! lol! But I hope you’ll get your own watercolors out, download the sketch that’s below the video – and paint with me! Share your own painting at the end of the post, and use the hashtag #paintalongwithsandy so we can all see what you’re creating! Watch the video below or click HERE to see it in HD on YouTube.
Click below to download whichever version of the sketch you’d like, then print it out and copy to your watercolor paper as shown in the video!
- Full size sketch (if you want to paint it larger) (JPG)
- 1/4 page size sketch (fits on a quarter sheet of a 9×12 pad, and fits on A2 sized greeting card) (PDF)
I’m over at Ellen Hutson today with a little introduction about DS watercolors – check it out HERE. There’s a video collab I created with Nolen Lee from Punching Pandas HERE – about how Daniel Smith watercolors are made! The poster of all the pandas is HERE, and there might be more of them individually in his shop so peek around to see if he got them posted yet 🙂
Below are links to the supplies I’ve used for today’s project; click on the listed items to go directly to it. Affiliate links may used, which means if you make a purchase I receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. I truly appreciate your support toward the costs of running this blog! Read more.

Hi Sandy, thank you for this first lesson. It is my first watercolor ever. It needs à lot of improving but I had à lot of fun making it. I followed your recommandation “stop looking and do something”. I really appreciate your generosity. I am getting reddy for lesson 2.
Thank you for doing this. Love the barn.
That was so much fun! I fiddled too much….I didn’t have a light hand….but I learned!!! What a great series! I had the best morning working on my barn with about 3 cups of coffee! LOL!!! Thanks for the great video and tips!
Thank you so much for your great teaching skills, talent, patience and video. I really enjoyed trying. Can’t wait to develop skills. You are the best!
I shoved the fear away, told my internal critic to shut up and did it! Thank you!
Frustrated. Can’t figure out how to upload pic. There is no url!!!
You are a good teacher Sandy. Thank you for these videos!
I found an alternative way to tracing the drawing. If you have an iPad you simply need to open the pdf on your iPad, put your sheet of paper on top and trace. Voila
My son is 6 and just beginning to love water coloring. We love watching your videos together. Thank you for providing such wonderful teaching. He was thrilled that the first paint a long was a barn!
Did my barn – my first watercolor. I don’t think I did too badly either!! Might try another barn. I don’t know how to link up a picture but wanted you to know that I got er done. Thanks so much for helping me learn new techniques and new things.
I am so surprised with how little paint you actual have on your brush. It makes a beautiful painting and the colors are so lively. I need to cut down on the amount and add water! Thanks for today’s barn.
Exceptional tutorial. As much as I have loved so many of your videos, I think this may be my all time favorite. I loved the real time aspect of it. I did not paint along because I was caught up in the technique. I will replay and paint along. Thank you for doing this series, Sandy.
I plan on giving this a good effort. I have always wanted to paint. I have to get some brushes paints papers….. then I’ll post what I create.
I always try to use your Affiliate links to order but have a question: when ordering more than one item (from the same company) do I need to use each separate link, or do you receive commission on my entire order if I only link via one item?
Nice barn! 🙂 Looking forward to painting along a little later today. Thanks!!
One link creates the cookie – shop your heart out 🙂
Thank you so much! I loved painting along with you and I’m so happy with my barn.
Not getting the size right. ..way off on even the PDF.
Sorry, had a funky link – the PDF one is fixed now.
I can’t download the A2 size either
Got it! On my iPad, save the PDF to photos and it prints the A2 size just fine.
You must have tried it just as I had updated the link! 😉
Looking forward to painting along! It looks like both the jpeg and pdf links go to the same jpg link?
Just fixed it, sorry!
Thank you for making the sketch available in format suitable for cards!
Love that barn. So cool.
