No Line Coloring: Copic vs Watercolor

June 2, 2015 by Sandy Allnock 131 Comments Filed Under: Copic Intermediate, Watercolor

Note: this video uses digital stamps no longer available. I’ll be working on revamping them and making them available on my teaching site later in 2021.

No line coloring has been a fluctuating trend over the last few years; I’ve tried it once or twice, and thought I’d give it a try again!

I decided to use a Cosmos digi to create today’s cards, and started off just printing the images to color.

But when I got to that step – whoa – the lines on the enlarged flowers became crazy thick! Big disappointment. So I got out my light box and did a pencil tracing instead, and suddenly realized I could do that with watercolor too! (If you don’t have a light box, try putting your papers against a window. During the daytime, of course!)

With Multiliner pens I’d recommend choosing a stamp line that you use a lot, and figure out which pen is the right width of pen will match them. Then you can always fix a little goober if you need to. And if you’d like to download a free cheat sheet so you can see what sizes best match up, I put together a quick pdf: Multiliner Widths ….make sure you print it at 100% so the line widths stay the same. (Read below for a pen giveaway!) (Ohmygosh is this a long post!)

I’m going to see if I can find any of these Chrysanthemums for my garden – they’re just so pretty! HERE is the photo I used for my color inspiration!

For my cards, I added them to simple black card bases, stamped a 2-part sentiment and tied on some ivory May Arts silk ribbon—it just adds an elegance to it, and also covers that white space in my design without detracting from the flowers.

The watercolor version came out just lovely too!

Realistically, in the next 30 days I might get in 3 or 4 days of coloring (but I’ll try to fit in as many new ideas from the challenges as possible. More likely is that over an extended period of time I will keep going back over the challenges until I try them all.

Thanks for this tutorial–I learn so much from them! As soon as I return home from vacation, I plan to purchase your edu-digi package. I won’t be able to start the 30 Day coloring challenge till then, but I plan to do the full 30 days.

I would love to join in but I would be very lucky if I could get at least 10 days of coloring in. My mother-in-law broke her ankle and tore her legiments and joints so I have to take care of part of the time.

    Absolutely Beautiful cards!!!
I will probably be able to do about 20 days of the 30 Day Coloring Challenge, maybe more if I keep it simple.

Probably – realistically – I’ll try to at 10 to 12 days out of the month. Prior commitments intrude some.
I did post a project already. Maybe I’ll be able to put in more.
Your flowers are so beautiful. they don’t look like the work of a person – they look like something coming from the paper store. Amazing coloring.
    thanks for sharing.

I adore this card and the message! It’s absolutely gorgeous! I do plan to do all 30 days of this card challenge, I was doing well on the one in March until I got a “bug”, lost 10 pounds in 2 days and was ill for a week! This should not happen, my work slows down during the summer so I should have more time as well. So color I will!

Your cards are gorgeous! I would never dare try coloring that many flower images. I like the bold bright card, but that watercolor card is my favorite. I’ll be lucky to do maybe 4 or 5 days of the challenge. I do love to color so I should try and make it a priority. Thanks for sharing.
