Hello friends! I’m traveling and teaching this weekend – including a Bible journaling class. Figured it’s as good a time as any to share another technique for my fellow Bible artists!
Impressionistic Pottery
While I created images – though simple ones – this technique can also be used for simple color washes. It’s much faster than many other mediums, and can create a textured look like this, or a softer watercolor look that you can see in the early stages in the video. Watch the video below or click HERE to see it in HD on YouTube.
In any case – the Prima oil pastels used here are a good bargain for the color you get – I’m traveling with mine and a pack of baby wipes! The chart below is one I’ve shared before with the colors, in case that’s helpful for you:

For the many people who have been begging for more Bible journaling – here’s one! I’m still only posting one every 4-6 weeks or more, it’s not a main staple for me, so I’m not able to create these videos more often.
Inspire Bible Journaling, simple backgrounds
I’ve shared the Inspire Bible before…and I wanted to share an easy background technique. You don’t even have to be a fancy painter or have fancy paints – I’m using ph Martins Hydrus Watercolors, but if you can puddle paint on a palette, and if you have baby wipes – you’re good to go.Watch the video below or click HERE to see it in HD on YouTube.
The background can be just part of a page or a full page. If you know how to paint flowers you could add a whole garden into the green background below – or do it in blue and make a pretty sky.
Some of you have asked if I could swatch the colors for the Hydrus sets so you can decide what you might want….here you go! Pin away.

Thanks so much to all who spent the day with me on Periscope. I know it’s a lot of scopes, but as you saw, I was trying to split them into shorter scopes on specific booths – so I’d recommend watching just the brands you like best. Don’t give in to FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out!) There are a gaJILLion scopes going on and you can’t get to them all…and don’t worry, you KNOW eventually your favorite crafters will share everything anyway. You honestly aren’t missing out. 🙂
Bible Journalling Class
I had a blast in the Bible Journalling class I took with Shanna Noel from Illustrated Faith Saturday night. And those who came along with enjoyed it too, I think! There are 2 videos to see – Part 1 and Part 2. In Part 2, students were invited to share their page, and a little about how they got into Bible journalling or experiences they had, etc. And there was one gal there who talked about her own unsure perspective, and how the little devotional we received had an impact on her. I had won one of the last 2 prize Bibles – and after hearing her speak, I went over after class and gave her that Bible. I didn’t know til afterward that she had leaned over to tell her Mom she wanted to start reading it more … Yep. That whole thing, that whole class, might have been just to bless that young lady. Big puffyheartlove moment!
If you don’t have time to watch the scope – or if it’s gone before you do – quick notes here on what’s used: Pebeo paints, which do not go through the paper (similar to the PhMartin Hydrus which also do not go through.) The Pebeo was put on thin enough (with a credit card) that the Scripture is still readable – that’s a big deal in my world. The letter stickers and washi tape are by Illustrated Faith, which is now being carried by Bella Blvd…and I think it just gives so much more credibility to the Bible Journalling movement! I’ve added white signo pen to the “speak” and black sketched in shadows under the lighter text.
I’m seeing a surprising number of faith-based products showing up….if you’re interested in items like that, tell your LSS owner to look for them! After CHA I’ll see about doing a wrapup and give you a list of all the Bible journalling things I saw.
Favorite so far
Folks have been asking my favorite things so far. Which is so hard to pick, dontcha know!! I definitely like a lot of what I saw, and you heard me drooling in some of the scopes. While I never create pieces like I saw some of the booths, (like Graphic 45) I still just LOVE seeing what they create! I visited more booths than what I scoped, as well – met up with the peeps at the MISTI booth, visited with Hero Arts and that’s always a treat, and so many more.
I got to meet some fantastic folks, some of whom are very related to my work and I’m excited to connect with after we all get home; and some who don’t do anything near to what I do – including a Danish distributor who says there ARE craft stores across Europe….so I’m calling shenanigans on those who tell me you can’t get stuff! lol! Email me your location and I’ll ask her where your closest stores are. 🙂 (And Charlie, her name is ALSO Charlie, are you all named Charlie over there in Denmark?!!?)
In sharing my FAVE of the day, I’m gonna disappoint some of you – because you’re probably waiting for me to say there’s a product I adore. I’ve seen some interesting things, nothing that has been mindblowing as yet. Lots yet to see! But today’s highlight….
Little B.
They’re known by most of you as washi tape, detailed embellishment stickers, and/or punches. But what really made them my “best of” for the day? Two things. 1) Damian Gonzales recreating Starry Night in washi tape, which is by far the most creative use of washi tape I have ever ever ever seen, and 2) the most magical little world full of teeny wooden toys I’ve ever seen! I’ve always had a love of toys – I even have a collection of books about collector toys, so yes I’m weird – and it just made me SO happy. Gonna go back and just watch the display again this week. See the replay HERE. I [bigpuffyheart love] the little monkeys riding around!
And by the way – I will get to the distress crayons. Honestly. Crowds are too big and I’m letting retailers be the ones to gather around Tim. You can stop asking repeatedly in my scopes. Thanks. 🙂
PS There may not be a vlog summary of CHA this year – with all the scopes, it feels like a sum up might be redundant? Dunno? I’m anxious to get busy creating rather than looking back at what I saw – my little phone list is FULL of ideas I want to go home and work on!
UPDATE: This was my earliest foray into Bible journaling; since this time I have not only continued and developed as a Bible journaler, but wrote a book! See more on the book site.
I had been looking for just the right Bible to begin art journalling in….I wanted an NRSV (long story as to why!), and wanted wide margins with lines for writing notes and drawing. (Because I can’t write straight to save my life!) I could only find a “used” one for less than a gajillion dollars since it’s no longer being made – fortunately the only thing that made it “used” was a broken spine. Which I’m repairing in today’s video!
I started watching a bunch of YouTube videos first, and had searched for book repair, to see if there were ideas on how to fix the broken spine shown in the video. I came upon an artist, Laura Carson, who made some absolutely amazing books! (This dragon book is phenomenal!) Though I swapped out a bunch of supplies, the basic technique is the same; I asked a lot of my mixed media friends about adhesive, and they all said be sure to replace the adhesive with PPA. And I agree – it’s pretty phenomenal stuff!
Isn’t this texture just delicious!?! It would be perfect for whatever book you want to cover – an art journal, a sketch book…..I might be making a bunch of these for Christmas gifts!
I cut a hole in my Bible cover to insert my life verse, printed from my computer and distressed with inks. In the video I showed my Olfa blade – I once purchased a big pack of these for OWH, and love them; I had originally found one in a craft store and ordered a big case of them, but now the only place I found them is HERE. In reality any heavy duty knife will cut a book cover.
A few words about the pages inside the book….I’ve had people frantically asking me what kind of Bible to get, what kind has paper you can paint on, what doesn’t go through the back. If you are terribly upset about anything going through to the back of the page, or stress out over wrinkling paper, Bible journalling is not for you. Books are made of paper. Paper and water generally do not get along perfectly. Paper wrinkles. It bleeds. You will never find a book paper that does not do so at all. This is art, and is messy – and if you get upset easily by potentially ruining a page in a Bible, do not get started on journalling this way, or you’ll be very unhappy at some point along the way.
I did discover that, for this particular Bible, which is printed on very standard paper – pages DO wrinkle though can be ironed; and Ph Martin paints do not bleed through.
I have absolutely NO idea what will happen in your Bible, or what kind of Bible you should go get. Please please please don’t ask me that. Just get a Bible you feel comfortable making art in. And test it out. Try the index pages first, to see what mediums you like. Go to YouTube and do searches. I don’t plan to be making a ton of videos on Bible journalling – my blog and YT channel are about cardmaking, and Bible journalling is a VERY personal thing, so I will not be

My Faithbook post for this month is also a Magical Monday card….just some lovely coloring and holiday music to get you into the true spirit of Christmas!
I had special long envelopes in my stash, and wanted to create a scene on a card custom-made for the envelopes with this Wplus9 Drummer Boy stamp set – they seemed to be a match made in heaven! I stamped all the images in hybrid ink, and started in with my Inktense pencils and a brush…one of the great things about Inktense is that it dries permanent – so as long as you strategically let areas dry while you paint others, you can keep the color bleeding to a minimum!

I’m not certain what I’d call this card fold; the paper is 3-1/4″ by 11″, and the folds are at 5 and 8 inches. You can adapt this to whatever your envelope size is; I wanted this to fit into a long thin envelope I had in my stash.
The barn wall came out so well – with simple strokes of different colors! I started off with dark ones on the left, and gradually got lighter and thinner toward the light source – the King Himself!

My Faithbook art journal pages might not be your typical art journal pages…but I. am. having. fun!
Ever since I started playing with Brusho a while back (see THIS POST if you need more product info), I knew there were amazing things to be done with it. Just seeing the Brusho Secrets website was enough to get me excited! I finally had to get this page underway, late one night when I couldn’t sleep; the hymn and the bear wouldn’t leave me alone til I completed it!
Fortunately I remembered to turn the camera on…because, you know, yeah. The number of times that I try something and didn’t expect it to turn out and it did? Hmm. Well, we all got lucky here!
And for anyone who’s upset that I added the lettering and journalling on top of my bear – remember that now I know how to paint a bear. I can go get a giant sheet of watercolor paper and paint a huge bear! Wouldn’t that be amazing!?
