This past weekend during Pass the Brush, I found that my guest Pam was profoundly impacted by a video in which I had said to stop calling yourself “just a crafter” or “just a stamper” – you are an ARTIST. You’ve made something where there had been nothing. You created! And I haven’t mentioned that in a while, so the advent of this stamp set from Catherine Pooler called Art Has No Rules seemed the perfect chance for a pep talk!

For today’s project I’ve made three cards – one simple, one medium, and one complex. But they are ALL ART! No matter what kind of cards you make, you need to start calling yourself an artist. Try referring to your crafty space as your art studio – it’ll take a while to get used to, but it may just change your mindset if you deliberately change the words you use about yourself!
Art has no rules
There’s no absolute right or wrong. You can use any colors, any layout, any style! Now there are some principles that can make your art more pleasing – color theory, design, etc, but those aren’t required to make it art. I’ve made lots of things that have destroyed all the rules and it still worked out well!
The first card is relatively simple, even though it has a little technique involved – stamping a texture on top of a solid stamp by just inking it up in a darker color and restamping it using the MISTI. I then colored over the “holes” in the palette with a marker, and then could just squish away with the paints, not having to worry about perfectly covering the white holes!
The second card had a little more looseness to it – a swath of pretty alcohol ink traveling across the card, then the same sentiment and palette on top, with the squeezed-out paints on the palette as well!
And finally, making a crazy painted background – using no brush! Just a piece of cardboard will do. When I stamped the palette on top it came oout a little textured, which made it fit in just perfectly with the background!
Later today I’ll have this card on Instagram – a Copic colored thank you card that will be sent to an art buyer … I always drop them a card in with the art package, just to say thanks for investing in my work!
