Today’s video is a little different – not exactly a tutorial, but sharing an experience I’ve had in the last couple weeks that vaused me massive DOUBT in myself as an artist. It brought to mind a question I saw someone ask, and the answer from Hank Green….and it helped me reframe how I was looking at my problem. I hope it’ll do the same for you!

Tutorial: ARTIST! Is your vision bigger than your skill?

Watch the video below and scroll to the end to leave comments or questions — or click HERE to watch it on YouTube and leave comments over there. I read both dutifully!

The “rejected” art

This piece ended up not in the course – and I almost deleted the footage. Glad I didn’t so I could have this to post today, though with a voiceover addressing something I hope helped you!  I really do like how this one came out, but it just wasn’t teaching anything unique in and of itself like the other 10 drawings did.

If the alcohol marker drawing you just saw in the video intrigued you, consider taking the course!

Sandy, I express my sincerest condolences for the loss of your mother. I was moved by everything you said about your mother in your newsletter. She would not want you to crumble, so be strong for her and live through all the wonderful memories you have with her. I am sending prayers and hugs to you. Thank you so much for sharing a bit of your mother with us. May she rest peacefully!

Haha, this is so timely as I am currently going through the “30 Days to More Confident Sketching”, and can you guess where I’m stuck? Yup – trees! I’ve watched and rewatched your videos, other YouTubers’ videos, and drawn and drawn and drawn trees. Sometimes they come out ok, other times (most times) they look like cotton candy balls stuck on sticks. But, I’ve been in this place before with other hobbies, and I know I can either quit out of frustration, or just keep working at it, and eventually I’ll break through this plateau and come out on the other side. I’m going for option B. I’ve also learned that I don’t want to draw “Sandy’s” or some other “YT’s” trees, but MY trees, so I need to find my unique style! Thanks for sharing this, Sandy, I’m keeping you in my prayers that our Lord may keep you and sustain you in your time of sorrow.
